As one of the leading bus and coach manufacturers worldwide, we see it as our task to drive the transformation and decarbonisation of our industry. Sustainability is therefore not an additional topic for us, but a central driver of our actions - with a view to the environment, society and people worldwide.
Based on this aspiration, we pursue a clear objective: we want to contribute to greater road safety, resource conservation and locally CO₂e-free bus mobility. To achieve this, we rely on a clear product roadmap, work on responsible value creation and fulfil our social responsibility along the supply chain. Specifically, we focus on four core topics in which we take targeted measures and drive progress.
Responsible mobility
Contribute to safe and CO₂e-free bus mobility.
We are continuing to develop bus mobility: by 2030, we are planning locally CO₂e-free drive systems in all product segments, and in the European city bus segment, we want to bring exclusively locally CO₂e-free new vehicles onto the road from 2030. In addition, we create transparency on the environmental properties of our vehicles through standardised environmental product declarations and work towards a clear ambition with “Vision Zero”: zero accidents with our buses and coaches.
Climate & environment
Reduce CO₂e emissions and resource consumption in our production and supply chain.
We want to reduce emissions (Scope 1 and 2) from our own production locations by 42% compared to 2021 by 2030 and offset the remaining emissions. In addition, strive to use resources efficiently, use water responsibly and reduce and - whenever possible - avoid waste.
In addition to our own emissions, we also look at the emissions along our supply chain: together with our direct suppliers, we want to achieve that our products and services in Europe and the USA are CO₂e-neutral by 2039. We aim to achieve this objective globally by 2050.
Circular economy
Extend life cycles and keep resources in circulation.
The circular economy begins long before the vehicle is produced. With ecodesign and recycling approaches, battery rework, second-life applications and more than 3,000 remanufactured parts, we help preserve the value of materials and components throughout their entire lifecycle.
Human rights
Fulfil human rights due care obligations along the value chain.
For us, social responsibility means respecting human rights for our employees worldwide and all people along the supply chain. We strongly reject child labour, forced labour, modern slavery and other violations of human rights and expect our partners to do the same. With our Human Rights Compliance Management System we systematically assess risks, evaluate suppliers consistently and create transparency in order to provide targeted remedies if required.
Innovation: one bus length ahead
Wireless software updates, 3D printing for replacement parts, digital twins for vehicles and assistance systems that can prevent accidents: this is how we are shaping bus mobility of tomorrow. With our innovations, we don't just want to drive the transformation, we want to lead it. For transport companies, travel providers, passengers and our employees.
Digitisation
How can vehicles and processes be continuously improved? We use digital twins for this. Our objective is to digitally map every vehicle throughout its entire life cycle. This allows data from development, production and operation to be used to improve processes, detect faults at an early stage and further develop vehicles in a targeted manner.
Data analyses and artifical intelligence help us to evaluate large amounts of data and derive insights from them for improved vehicles and digital services.
Networked vehicles
Our offer does not end with the delivery of a vehicle. Over-the-air updates (OTA) allow software updates to be transferred directly to supported vehicles. Without a workshop visit.
Advantages for operators:
Less unplanned downtime
Higher vehicle availability
Faster deployment of new functions
Digital geofencing and telediagnostics
Better planning of maintenance measures
Safety
Our aim is to make mobility not only more sustainable, but also safer. Driver assistance systems help drivers to recognise critical situations at an early stage and to avoid accidents. We are continuously working on improving these assistance systems.
Holistic electric driving
We view electric driving as an overall system consisting of vehicles, power supply equipment, digital services and operating concepts. With our eMobility ecosystem, we support transport companies in successfully shaping the transition to local CO₂e-free public transport.
Legal note on active safety assistance systems: Emergency braking systems and other safety assistance systems can support the driver and, under optimal conditions and within the system limits, mitigate the severity of accidents or prevent accidents in critical driving situations. Irrespective of this, however, the driver is obliged to adapt his driving style and, in particular, his speed to the traffic and weather conditions and to remain attentive at all times. This applies in particular to special situations such as icing-up or wet roadways, rain, crosswinds, poor visibility, snowfall, fog, etc. Consequently, as the driver of the vehicle, the driver is responsible for the entire driving process at all times and must not rely solely on the safety assistance systems.
Assistance systems can only support drivers. Drivers are always fully responsible for the safe operation of the vehicle.
Questions about sustainability at Daimler Buses:
With which site-specific measures does Daimler Buses reduce CO₂e emissions and resource consumption in production?
Green electricity contracts for all European plants since 2022
By 2030, all production locations worldwide should use green electricity, with at least 55% of the energy used coming from renewable sources
Own PV systems at several locations with a total of around 6,000 MWh of electricity per year
The objective is to fully supply the Mannheim and Ligny-en-Barrois plants with district heating from renewable energy sources by 2030
“Wet-in-wet” painting process at the Neu-Ulm plant for reduced energy and water consumption, emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and waste
Water treatment at the Hoşdere production location for reuse in production processes
How does Daimler Buses support transport companies on the way to a locally CO₂e-free bus operation?
With the eCitaro for urban traffic and the battery-electric eIntouro for intercity routes, Daimler Buses already offers local CO₂e-free solutions for various areas of application. By 2030, the enterprise plans to offer a CO₂e-free touring coach in driving operation. In addition, the bus manufacturer and its subsidiary Daimler Buses Solutions provide comprehensive support to customers in the transition to electric bus fleets.
What happens to high-voltage batteries if their performance drops?
Depending on the condition, high-voltage batteries can be reconditioned to extend the vehicle life cycle. In addition, Daimler Buses is testing second-life applications, such as use as stationary storage units that can temporarily store energy and support power supply equipment.
How does Daimler Buses implement human rights due diligence in the supply chain?
The Human Rights Compliance Management System supports Daimler Buses in systematically fulfilling its human rights due care obligations. In addition, the enterprise evaluates its suppliers in the procurement process and checks critical raw materials in a targeted manner via supply chain assessments. Together with the partners, Daimler Buses derives measures to initiate improvements as required.
How does Daimler Buses anchor the topic of sustainability in the enterprise?
Sustainability is an integral part of Daimler Buses’ business strategy: the company evaluates the impact of its actions on the environment and society as well as market shares or profits. For this reason, Daimler Buses has set clear objectives, translates these into concrete measures and continuously controls progress.
